HDPE Geomembrane (High-Density Polyethylene)

HDPE remains one of the most widely used geomembrane materials because it offers excellent chemical resistance, low permeability, and cost-effective performance for large-scale containment. HDPE geomembrane liners are a strong choice when chemical exposure and impermeability are primary concerns. Because HDPE is more rigid than reinforced alternatives, installation can be more challenging on sites with complex shapes or irregular slopes.

  • Best for: Industrial containment, large ponds, environmental remediation
  • Chemical resistance: Excellent
  • UV resistance: Good (with carbon black formulation)
  • Typical lifespan: 20-30+ years
  • Relative cost: Low-moderate

RPE (Reinforced Polyethylene)

When a project requires a lightweight liner without sacrificing strength, reinforced polyethylene (RPE) is often an excellent choice. RPE combines polyethylene with a woven reinforcement layer to create a strong, durable geomembrane. Its high strength-to-weight ratio allows us to fabricate very large panels, which can reduce field seaming and speed installation. In many applications, RPE can also be installed without an underlayment, helping lower total project cost.

  • UV resistance: Very good

RPP (Reinforced Polypropylene)

For potable water applications, Carson Liners frequently recommends reinforced polypropylene (RPP). The material can be box-welded into three-dimensional shapes with clean corners and minimal folds or wrinkles, making it especially well suited for water tank liners and precise containment geometries. NSF/ANSI 61 certified RPP options are available for drinking water contact and can provide an exceptionally long service life.

CSPE / HypaFlex (Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene)

CSPE, now commonly marketed as HypaFlex and formerly known as Hypalon, is a premium geomembrane material valued for outstanding UV and weathering resistance. It is often selected for floating covers and exposed liner applications where long-term sun exposure cannot be avoided. Available products may carry extended weathering warranties, including 30-year options.

  • Best for: Floating covers, exposed liners, extreme UV environments
  • Chemical resistance: Good
  • UV resistance: Outstanding (30-year warranty)
  • Typical lifespan: 30+ years
  • Relative cost: High

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

PVC is a flexible, economical geomembrane option that is easy to handle and shape during installation. Because it has limited long-term UV stability, PVC should generally be buried or covered when used outdoors. It can be a practical choice for buried containment, plating tank liners, and budget-sensitive applications where direct sunlight is not a factor.

  • Chemical resistance: Moderate
  • UV resistance: Poor (must be buried)
  • Typical lifespan: 10-20 years

Rather than relying entirely on field-seamed panels, Carson Liners fabricates large geomembrane liner sections in our controlled factory environment whenever project conditions allow. Factory fabrication provides more consistent quality control, reduces the number of seams completed at the job site, and can shorten installation time. Every seam is inspected and tested before the liner leaves our facility.

Our Process

  1. Site Assessment and Measurement. We review your site, drawings, or project specifications to confirm dimensions, substrate conditions, chemical exposure, UV exposure, access limitations, and other factors that may affect liner performance.
  2. Material Selection. We recommend the geomembrane material best suited to the application. Each recommendation considers chemical compatibility, anticipated service life, installation conditions, regulatory needs, and budget.
  3. Factory Fabrication. Your liner is fabricated to the required dimensions in our facility using controlled heat-seaming processes. Seams are inspected and tested before shipment.
  4. Shipping and delivery. The completed liner is carefully folded, rolled, or packaged for transport. Depending on the material and project size, large liners may ship as one or a small number of panels to reduce field seaming.
  5. Professional Installation. Our installation crews manage the work from site preparation through final inspection. Team members are trained in applicable CAL/OSHA confined-space and fall-protection requirements and maintain seam certifications for HDPE and reinforced materials.
